Healthy Granola Bar Recipe

Granola bars are a convenient and healthy snack, especially for seniors who are always on the go. They are also something you or your loved one can make right at home! Try this recipe with a Seniors Helping Seniors® caregiver:

What you will need:

  • 1 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup packed dates, pitted
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup creamy salted natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup roasted, unsalted almonds, loosely chopped
  • Chocolate chips, banana chips, dried fruit, nuts, etc… (optional additions)


  1. Process dates in a food processor for about one minute, or until small bits remain. They should form a dough-like consistency.
  2. Optional: Toast your oats and almonds (if raw). Place in a 350° oven for 10-15 minutes, until slightly golden brown.
  3. Add oats, almonds, dates, and any additional ingredients (chocolate chips, dried fruit) to a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  4. Warm maple syrup and peanut butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir and pour over oat mixture, then mix thoroughly, dispersing dates throughout.
  5. Once combined, transfer to an 8x8-inch baking dish lined with plastic wrap or parchment paper.
  6. Press down firmly until uniformly flattened. Use the bottom of a drinking glass to pack ingredients tightly, which helps the bars to stay together.
  7. Cover with parchment paper or plastic wrap and set in the refrigerator or freezer to firm for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Remove from pan and cut bars into even parts. Store in an airtight container for up to three or four days.
